SOMA CAMP

Camp 2025 is set for January 17-20th, 2025

Registrants may arrive anytime after 1pm on Friday this year!

What is SOMA Camp?

SOMA Camp is an annual multi-day event nestled among acres of oak, madrone, tan oak, redwood, and Douglas fir trees near Occidental, California hosted by us, the Sonoma County Mycological Association!

SOMA Camp serves as a benefit for the SOMA Scholarship Fund and is packed with mushroom forays, specimen tables, an abundant cheese table, technical and beginner-friendly presentations, cooking demonstrations and mushroom-rich meals, cultivation workshops, fiber arts & fungal pigment classes, microscopy lessons and top-notch speakers!

Changes for SOMA Camp 2025

If you’ve been to SOMA Camp in the past, a few things have changed this year:

  • Everyone may arrive and check in on Friday anytime after 1pm - avoid Saturday morning parking!

  • Bring your mushroom outfit for the fungal fashion show!

  • Sunday’s dinner will be prepared by professional chef Daniel Kedan; Friday & Saturday dinners will be prepared by Jennifer Levine. All meals will happen with support from SOMA’s culinary volunteers, CYO staff, and the Culinary Institute of America.

  • Volunteers don’t have to pay for cabins, but we may rely on using upper bunks for the volunteer cabins.

Great Food!

SOMA Camp is well-known for its downright delicious culinary delights! Camp tickets include breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a 5-course feast on Sunday night and special surprises in between.

Location and Accommodations

SOMA Camp is held at CYO Retreat Center, a wonderful modern conference center near Occidental, about an hour north of San Francisco. The spacious, modern buildings are set amongst 225 acres of great mushroom habitat: mixed oak, redwood, madrone, CA bay and Douglas-fir forests.

Lodging is in shared, heated cabins with hardwood floors, designer bunks and personal cubbyholes. There are six bunkbeds per cabin, but we try to only use lower bunks only. The cabins are bright, clean, and airy. The shared restrooms and showers are a short walk from the cabins (in most cases.) Elders are lodged close to the restroom facilities, and vehicles may be parked near the cabins.

Off-site lodging options are also available in the nearby areas of Occidental, Sebastopol, Petaluma, Jenner and Santa Rosa.

  • Please note that CYO does not allow pets -- no dogs, no cats, not even if you keep them in your vehicle or RV or camper.

  • CYO is a peanut-free facility. Please don't bring any peanut products onto the grounds or into the cabins.

Get Involved at Camp!

Volunteer

This is a very popular and well-attended event, so we only have a limited number of work-exchange volunteer positions each year, with an expectation of approximately 10 hours of volunteer work during the 4-day event. Please use the Camp Registration that opens on November 16, 2025 to register as a volunteer, and list your qualifications and contact information. Please consider this “registration” process as an application. We will contact you if we have room and need of your abilities.

Volunteer/Work-Exchange Selection

Returning SOMA Camp volunteers will be given a priority as it reduces the training required and makes for a smoother, more cohesive camp when we have individuals who know what needs to be done, how to do it, and have proven their reliability. For new SOMA Camp volunteers the process is FIFO (first in, first out) though we do give priority to student volunteers. We will also be giving a higher priority to applicants with more availability and applicants who can perform multiple volunteer tasks.

Requirements and expectations

  • Membership: Every volunteer MUST be a member of SOMA. You will not be considered for work exchange unless you are a registered SOMA member and your membership is valid through January 2025.

  • The volunteer coordinator will contact you after you register/apply.

  • Onsite cabins are available to volunteers at no cost, but we plan to put at 8-10 volunteers per cabin using both upper bunks and lower bunks. Or you can stay offsite or in your RV/Camper. Tent camping is not allowed (and it’s likely to be raining and cold!).

  • All meals are included.

  • Your volunteer schedule permitting, you’ll have equal access to lectures, workshops, and forays when you’re not working your designated tasks.

  • If your availability to attend Camp changes for unforeseen reasons, please notify the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible.

Vendors

Want have a table at SOMA camp?

Vendors please use the main camp registration that opens on Nov 16th, 2024. Vendors must pay an up-front fee of $150.00 which includes all meals during the event, an RV/Camper space, and you are welcome to attend lectures and forays if you don’t mind leaving your table unattended. Vendors will be in the main hall, and each vendor has 8 feet of space along the East wall of the main hall. Due to space limitations, we plan to allow approximately 8 vendors this year, so please register right away. These spots will fill up quickly. Presenters and authors who wish to sell a few items may sell them through the bookstore without having a designated space.

  • There is no longer a 10% gross sales fee.

  • Please bring your own table(s) for your 8-foot space and a cloth to cover your table when you’re not there.

  • Please store valuables securely; SOMA cannot take responsibility for your lost items.

  • Helpers for sales are OK. Please list their names when you register, but its expected that only one person would be onsite at your table and partake in meals, except for setup/cleanup.

Silent Auction Donations

Please consider donating to SOMA Camp’s silent auction fundraiser! Proceeds from this auction event go directly to our scholarship fund for college/graduate students, community mycologist and our fungal DNA sequencing fund.

As a donor, you will receive prominent mention in the Donor Acknowledgement provided in each camper’s information packet. All donations are tax deductible.
